PLECK lesson 17 · suggested week 4, day 2

Handwashing and illness boundaries

Objective. Handwashing and illness boundaries:apply the stated method to a concrete case, produce the requested evidence, and justify safe, private, and accessible choices.

About 25–50 minutes. The due date is chosen by a parent.

Split across sittings as needed;no timer or required date.Adult approval remains required even for independent work.

Materials: paper, pencil, optional calculator.

Hands move germs between tasks. Use soap and running water, scrub all hand surfaces for at least 20 seconds, rinse, and dry with a clean towel. Wash before food handling and after raw food, garbage, toilet use, pets, or coughing. Gloves do not replace clean hands. A person who is ill should tell an adult and avoid preparing food for others as directed. Safety and boundaries: Adult directly supervises all food work and manages heat/sharp tools. Check all ingredients and established allergy plans. No raw-meat handling, tolerance tests, tasting uncertain food, or deliberate unsafe holding. Family-only evidence;use fictional details,no faces or private records. No purchases are required.

Worked example

Unscored model for discussion;use the assignment case for your own work.

After handling a trash bag, stop before touching clean plates, wash hands, and resume with clean hands.

Handwashing and illness boundaries — evidence and reflection

  1. 1. Write a handwashing sequence and label the 20-second step.
  2. 2. List four moments in a pretend meal task when handwashing is needed.
  3. 3. Demonstrate handwashing to an adult or diagram every hand surface to scrub. No face photo.
  4. 4. Explain why clean gloves can become contaminated.
  5. 5. Spiral review — Compare a$9 item lasting 30 uses with a$12 item lasting 60 uses. Find cost per use. Spiral review.

Acceptance checks

An adult supervises. This stays in the family. Spending is a simulation, not real money.

For any optional food, adult verifies all ingredients and established allergy needs;avoid cross-contact,no tolerance tests, and use paper food if uncertain. For clothing/cleaning,adult checks sensitivities and labels;no chemical mixing.

Adult directly supervises all food work and manages heat/sharp tools. Check all ingredients and established allergy plans. No raw-meat handling, tolerance tests, tasting uncertain food, or deliberate unsafe holding.

Complete the entire task using paper diagrams, fictional data,empty/inactive tools, and parent-observed explanation.

  • No unsupervised heat,sharp tools,cleaners,or appliances.
  • No raw-meat handling,unsafe food tasting,chemical mixing,flame/smoke experiments,or electrical repair.
  • No real childcare/medical/intimate care,financial transactions,credentials,private records,or public posting.

If this is still shaky. Use this lesson’s worked model to make a three-box process card.Label the goal, one safety/constraint check, and the evidence you would show.Explain it to a parent before trying the main task again.

Optional extra. Change one fictional constraint in this lesson, such as available time, access, ingredient restriction,or pretend cost.Revise one artifact and show what must change and what safety/privacy rule stays fixed.
