PLECK lesson 51 · suggested week 11, day 1

Useful U. S. cooking conversions

Objective. Useful U. S. cooking conversions:apply the stated method to a concrete case, produce the requested evidence, and justify safe, private, and accessible choices.

About 25–50 minutes. The due date is chosen by a parent.

Split across sittings as needed;no timer or required date.Adult approval remains required even for independent work.

Materials: paper, pencil, optional calculator.

For these U. S. cooking exercises, 1 Tbsp=3 tsp, 1 cup=16 Tbsp, 2 cups=1 pint, and 4 cups=1 quart. Keep the unit name through each calculation. These are volume relationships, not universal weight conversions. Check package and recipe systems before using metric or international cup measures. This is a paper mathematics lesson, not a requirement to pour ingredients. Safety and boundaries: Adult directly manages heat, steam, sharp tools, and appliances. Paper/empty-tool/cold-water simulations earn equal credit. No raw-flour tasting, deep frying, flame, or appliance repair. Family-only evidence;use fictional details,no faces or private records. No purchases are required.

Worked example

Unscored model for discussion;use the assignment case for your own work.

Half a U. S. cup equals 8 tablespoons because 16÷2=8.

Useful U. S. cooking conversions — evidence and reflection

  1. 1. Convert 1/4 cup and 3/4 cup to tablespoons.
  2. 2. Convert 6 tsp to tablespoons and 3 pints to cups.
  3. 3. Create a labeled conversion strip linking tsp, Tbsp, cup, pint, and quart.
  4. 4. Explain why 16 Tbsp of flour and 16 Tbsp of oil need not weigh the same.
  5. 5. Spiral review — An invented label lists 2 g fiber per 1/3 cup. Find fiber in 2/3 cup. Spiral review.

Acceptance checks

An adult supervises. This stays in the family. Spending is not required.

For any optional food, adult verifies all ingredients and established allergy needs;avoid cross-contact,no tolerance tests, and use paper food if uncertain. For clothing/cleaning,adult checks sensitivities and labels;no chemical mixing.

Adult directly manages heat, steam, sharp tools, and appliances. Paper/empty-tool/cold-water simulations earn equal credit. No raw-flour tasting, deep frying, flame, or appliance repair.

Complete the entire task using paper diagrams, fictional data,empty/inactive tools, and parent-observed explanation.

  • No unsupervised heat,sharp tools,cleaners,or appliances.
  • No raw-meat handling,unsafe food tasting,chemical mixing,flame/smoke experiments,or electrical repair.
  • No real childcare/medical/intimate care,financial transactions,credentials,private records,or public posting.

If this is still shaky. Use this lesson’s worked model to make a three-box process card.Label the goal, one safety/constraint check, and the evidence you would show.Explain it to a parent before trying the main task again.

Optional extra. Change one fictional constraint in this lesson, such as available time, access, ingredient restriction,or pretend cost.Revise one artifact and show what must change and what safety/privacy rule stays fixed.
