PLECK lesson 53 · suggested week 11, day 3

Mise en place and safe preparation flow

Objective. Mise en place and safe preparation flow:apply the stated method to a concrete case, produce the requested evidence, and justify safe, private, and accessible choices.

About 25–50 minutes. The due date is chosen by a parent.

Split across sittings as needed;no timer or required date.Adult approval remains required even for independent work.

Materials: paper, pencil, optional calculator.

Mise en place means preparing and arranging what you need before cooking. Read first, review allergies, gather tools, measure ingredients, and keep clean and raw-food zones separate. Put only approved items in the work area. Organization reduces rushed reaching around heat or sharp tools. Use labeled paper ingredients and an inactive appliance drawing for a no-cost rehearsal. Safety and boundaries: Adult directly manages heat, steam, sharp tools, and appliances. Paper/empty-tool/cold-water simulations earn equal credit. No raw-flour tasting, deep frying, flame, or appliance repair. Family-only evidence;use fictional details,no faces or private records. No purchases are required.

Worked example

Unscored model for discussion;use the assignment case for your own work.

Before a pretend soup task, paper ingredients are grouped in order of use and the cleanup container is ready before any heating would begin.

Mise en place and safe preparation flow — evidence and reflection

  1. 1. Arrange six paper cards for a bean-wrap preparation from allergy check through storage.
  2. 2. Make a tool/ingredient checklist for the four-portion wrap recipe from this unit.
  3. 3. Identify two ways clutter could create a safety problem.
  4. 4. Revise your layout for someone using a seated workspace.
  5. 5. Spiral review — Design a varied fictional lunch with one ingredient restriction and an adult-review note. Spiral review.

Acceptance checks

An adult supervises. This stays in the family. Spending is not required.

For any optional food, adult verifies all ingredients and established allergy needs;avoid cross-contact,no tolerance tests, and use paper food if uncertain. For clothing/cleaning,adult checks sensitivities and labels;no chemical mixing.

Adult directly manages heat, steam, sharp tools, and appliances. Paper/empty-tool/cold-water simulations earn equal credit. No raw-flour tasting, deep frying, flame, or appliance repair.

Complete the entire task using paper diagrams, fictional data,empty/inactive tools, and parent-observed explanation.

  • No unsupervised heat,sharp tools,cleaners,or appliances.
  • No raw-meat handling,unsafe food tasting,chemical mixing,flame/smoke experiments,or electrical repair.
  • No real childcare/medical/intimate care,financial transactions,credentials,private records,or public posting.

If this is still shaky. Use this lesson’s worked model to make a three-box process card.Label the goal, one safety/constraint check, and the evidence you would show.Explain it to a parent before trying the main task again.

Optional extra. Change one fictional constraint in this lesson, such as available time, access, ingredient restriction,or pretend cost.Revise one artifact and show what must change and what safety/privacy rule stays fixed.
