PLECK lesson 56 · suggested week 12, day 1

Heat, burn, and appliance boundaries

Objective. Heat, burn, and appliance boundaries:apply the stated method to a concrete case, produce the requested evidence, and justify safe, private, and accessible choices.

About 25–50 minutes. The due date is chosen by a parent.

Split across sittings as needed;no timer or required date.Adult approval remains required even for independent work.

Materials: paper, pencil, optional calculator.

Heat sources, baking pans, and steam can burn even after power is off. An adult must approve and directly supervise appliance work, follow manufacturer directions, and use suitable dry heat protection. Keep combustibles away, turn pan handles away from edges when safe, and never reach across a hot surface. No deep frying, flame experiments, or appliance repair is assigned. A cold, inactive appliance sketch is the default. Safety and boundaries: Adult directly manages heat, steam, sharp tools, and appliances. Paper/empty-tool/cold-water simulations earn equal credit. No raw-flour tasting, deep frying, flame, or appliance repair. Family-only evidence;use fictional details,no faces or private records. No purchases are required.

Worked example

Unscored model for discussion;use the assignment case for your own work.

Opening a microwave-safe cover away from the face reduces steam exposure, but an adult still manages hot containers and package directions.

Heat, burn, and appliance boundaries — evidence and reflection

  1. 1. Annotate a generic stove drawing with four hazard controls.
  2. 2. Explain why a damp cloth is not a substitute for proper dry oven protection.
  3. 3. Create an adult-managed heat-task permission checklist and paper fallback.
  4. 4. A smoke alarm sounds during cooking. Write the priority without trying to fight a fire.
  5. 5. Spiral review — Design a varied fictional lunch with one ingredient restriction and an adult-review note. Spiral review.

Acceptance checks

An adult supervises. This stays in the family. Spending is not required.

For any optional food, adult verifies all ingredients and established allergy needs;avoid cross-contact,no tolerance tests, and use paper food if uncertain. For clothing/cleaning,adult checks sensitivities and labels;no chemical mixing.

Adult directly manages heat, steam, sharp tools, and appliances. Paper/empty-tool/cold-water simulations earn equal credit. No raw-flour tasting, deep frying, flame, or appliance repair.

Complete the entire task using paper diagrams, fictional data,empty/inactive tools, and parent-observed explanation.

  • No unsupervised heat,sharp tools,cleaners,or appliances.
  • No raw-meat handling,unsafe food tasting,chemical mixing,flame/smoke experiments,or electrical repair.
  • No real childcare/medical/intimate care,financial transactions,credentials,private records,or public posting.

If this is still shaky. Use this lesson’s worked model to make a three-box process card.Label the goal, one safety/constraint check, and the evidence you would show.Explain it to a parent before trying the main task again.

Optional extra. Change one fictional constraint in this lesson, such as available time, access, ingredient restriction,or pretend cost.Revise one artifact and show what must change and what safety/privacy rule stays fixed.
