PLECK lesson 59 · suggested week 12, day 4

Recipe adaptation and method demonstration

Objective. Recipe adaptation and method demonstration:apply the stated method to a concrete case, produce the requested evidence, and justify safe, private, and accessible choices.

About 35–75 minutes. The due date is chosen by a parent.

Split across sittings as needed;no timer or required date.Adult approval remains required even for independent work.

Materials: paper, pencil, optional calculator.

Combine recipe reading, measurement, sequence, and safety in one teaching packet. Work from the original four-portion bean-wrap plan in this unit or use the provided paper ingredients. The goal is a clear, repeatable procedure, not a meal photo. Actual assembly is optional only with adult-approved ingredients and supervision. A drawing or oral explanation with labeled paper props meets the same standard. Safety and boundaries: Adult directly manages heat, steam, sharp tools, and appliances. Paper/empty-tool/cold-water simulations earn equal credit. No raw-flour tasting, deep frying, flame, or appliance repair. Family-only evidence;use fictional details,no faces or private records. No purchases are required.

Worked example

Unscored model for discussion;use the assignment case for your own work.

A two-portion packet lists 2 tortillas, 1/2 cup beans, and 1/2 cup prepared vegetables, with clean assembly and prompt service/storage.

Recipe adaptation and method demonstration — evidence and reflection

  1. 1. Create original and half-yield ingredient tables for the four-portion wrap recipe.
  2. 2. Produce an eight-step method including allergy, handwashing, separation, assembly, and storage.
  3. 3. Demonstrate one measurement method with empty tools, paper, or approved cold water.
  4. 4. Attach an adult-review checklist and revise one instruction for clarity.
  5. 5. Spiral review — Compare a$9 item lasting 30 uses with a$12 item lasting 60 uses. Find cost per use. Spiral review.

Acceptance checks

An adult supervises. This stays in the family. Spending is a simulation, not real money.

For any optional food, adult verifies all ingredients and established allergy needs;avoid cross-contact,no tolerance tests, and use paper food if uncertain. For clothing/cleaning,adult checks sensitivities and labels;no chemical mixing.

Adult directly manages heat, steam, sharp tools, and appliances. Paper/empty-tool/cold-water simulations earn equal credit. No raw-flour tasting, deep frying, flame, or appliance repair.

Complete the entire task using paper diagrams, fictional data,empty/inactive tools, and parent-observed explanation.

  • No unsupervised heat,sharp tools,cleaners,or appliances.
  • No raw-meat handling,unsafe food tasting,chemical mixing,flame/smoke experiments,or electrical repair.
  • No real childcare/medical/intimate care,financial transactions,credentials,private records,or public posting.

If this is still shaky. Use this lesson’s worked model to make a three-box process card.Label the goal, one safety/constraint check, and the evidence you would show.Explain it to a parent before trying the main task again.

Optional extra. Change one fictional constraint in this lesson, such as available time, access, ingredient restriction,or pretend cost.Revise one artifact and show what must change and what safety/privacy rule stays fixed.
