PLECK lesson 78 · suggested week 16, day 3

Build a fictional food budget

Objective. Build a fictional food budget:apply the stated method to a concrete case, produce the requested evidence, and justify safe, private, and accessible choices.

About 25–50 minutes. The due date is chosen by a parent.

Split across sittings as needed;no timer or required date.Adult approval remains required even for independent work.

Materials: paper, pencil, optional calculator.

A food budget is a limit and a plan, not a report of family income. List quantities, prices, and a buffer before deciding. Distinguish the cost of a whole package from the cost allocated to a portion; actual cash needed may be higher than the recipe share. All prices here are invented and exclude tax unless stated. No shopping cart or purchase is part of class. Safety and boundaries: No purchase, event invitation, real guest, or personal receipt is required. Adult reviews allergens and manages heat/sharp tools; keep food safely cold/hot if any optional food is used. Family-only evidence;use fictional details,no faces or private records. No purchases are required.

Worked example

Unscored model for discussion;use the assignment case for your own work.

A$4 bag used halfway contributes$2 to a recipe, but buying the bag still requires$4 upfront.

Build a fictional food budget — evidence and reflection

  1. 1. Price a pretend meal:beans$2.40, tortillas$2.80, vegetables$3.20, fruit$1.60. Find total.
  2. 2. With a$12 limit, find remaining buffer.
  3. 3. Make a package-cost versus used-portion-cost table for a$4 bag used halfway.
  4. 4. Revise one component to reduce total by at least$1 without ignoring allergy/safety needs.
  5. 5. Spiral review — A two-portion paper bowl uses 1 cup beans total. How much per portion? Spiral review.

Acceptance checks

An adult supervises. This stays in the family. Spending is a simulation, not real money.

For any optional food, adult verifies all ingredients and established allergy needs;avoid cross-contact,no tolerance tests, and use paper food if uncertain. For clothing/cleaning,adult checks sensitivities and labels;no chemical mixing.

No purchase, event invitation, real guest, or personal receipt is required. Adult reviews allergens and manages heat/sharp tools; keep food safely cold/hot if any optional food is used.

Complete the entire task using paper diagrams, fictional data,empty/inactive tools, and parent-observed explanation.

  • No unsupervised heat,sharp tools,cleaners,or appliances.
  • No raw-meat handling,unsafe food tasting,chemical mixing,flame/smoke experiments,or electrical repair.
  • No real childcare/medical/intimate care,financial transactions,credentials,private records,or public posting.

If this is still shaky. Use this lesson’s worked model to make a three-box process card.Label the goal, one safety/constraint check, and the evidence you would show.Explain it to a parent before trying the main task again.

Optional extra. Change one fictional constraint in this lesson, such as available time, access, ingredient restriction,or pretend cost.Revise one artifact and show what must change and what safety/privacy rule stays fixed.
