PLECK lesson 109 · suggested week 22, day 4

Fibers, construction, and practical clothing choice

Objective. Fibers, construction, and practical clothing choice:apply the stated method to a concrete case, produce the requested evidence, and justify safe, private, and accessible choices.

About 25–50 minutes. The due date is chosen by a parent.

Split across sittings as needed;no timer or required date.Adult approval remains required even for independent work.

Materials: paper, pencil, optional calculator.

Natural and manufactured fibers have different properties, but a finished garment also depends on weave, knit, finish, and care. Evaluate intended use, comfort, access, cost, and repair potential. Do not require students to burn fibers or test chemicals to identify them. Use labels or fictional swatches. A choice can be suitable for one task without being universally superior. Safety and boundaries: Adult directly supervises needles, scissors, pins, appliances, and any products; count sharps before/after. No chemical mixing, pod opening, irons, machines, or real garment repair is required. Keep small parts from children/pets. Family-only evidence;use fictional details,no faces or private records. No purchases are required.

Worked example

Unscored model for discussion;use the assignment case for your own work.

A washable everyday layer may fit a messy project better than a delicate dry-clean-only item, depending on the actual label and needs.

Fibers, construction, and practical clothing choice — evidence and reflection

  1. 1. Compare two invented garments by warmth, care, upfront cost, and repairability.
  2. 2. Explain knit versus woven construction with a simple loop/grid drawing.
  3. 3. Reject a proposed burn test and provide a safe identification alternative.
  4. 4. Choose a fictional outfit for a practical task with one access need and justify it.
  5. 5. Spiral review — Write a no-heat/paper alternative when an oven task lacks an adult. Spiral review.

Acceptance checks

An adult supervises. This stays in the family. Spending is not required.

For any optional food, adult verifies all ingredients and established allergy needs;avoid cross-contact,no tolerance tests, and use paper food if uncertain. For clothing/cleaning,adult checks sensitivities and labels;no chemical mixing.

Adult directly supervises needles, scissors, pins, appliances, and any products; count sharps before/after. No chemical mixing, pod opening, irons, machines, or real garment repair is required. Keep small parts from children/pets.

Complete the entire task using paper diagrams, fictional data,empty/inactive tools, and parent-observed explanation.

  • No unsupervised heat,sharp tools,cleaners,or appliances.
  • No raw-meat handling,unsafe food tasting,chemical mixing,flame/smoke experiments,or electrical repair.
  • No real childcare/medical/intimate care,financial transactions,credentials,private records,or public posting.

If this is still shaky. Use this lesson’s worked model to make a three-box process card.Label the goal, one safety/constraint check, and the evidence you would show.Explain it to a parent before trying the main task again.

Optional extra. Change one fictional constraint in this lesson, such as available time, access, ingredient restriction,or pretend cost.Revise one artifact and show what must change and what safety/privacy rule stays fixed.
