PLECK lesson 116 · suggested week 24, day 1

Threading, knotting, and running stitch

Objective. Threading, knotting, and running stitch:apply the stated method to a concrete case, produce the requested evidence, and justify safe, private, and accessible choices.

About 25–50 minutes. The due date is chosen by a parent.

Split across sittings as needed;no timer or required date.Adult approval remains required even for independent work.

Materials: paper, pencil, optional calculator.

A running stitch alternates small forward passes through material, leaving gaps between visible stitches. With adult supervision, use a manageable thread length, knot an end, and guide the needle away from fingers; finish by securing thread so the sample does not unravel. Do not force a stuck needle. Paper dotted paths or blunt lacing through adult-prepared holes show the same over-under sequence. Safety and boundaries: Adult directly supervises needles, scissors, pins, appliances, and any products; count sharps before/after. No chemical mixing, pod opening, irons, machines, or real garment repair is required. Keep small parts from children/pets. Family-only evidence;use fictional details,no faces or private records. No purchases are required.

Worked example

Unscored model for discussion;use the assignment case for your own work.

A line of eight marked points can alternate front/back passes to model a running stitch without a sharp needle.

Threading, knotting, and running stitch — evidence and reflection

  1. 1. Draw an eight-point running-stitch path showing front and back segments.
  2. 2. Make a supervised scrap sample or blunt-lacing/paper simulation with at least six passes.
  3. 3. Explain why pulling every stitch extremely tight can distort fabric.
  4. 4. Record a tool count and one adjustment to spacing or tension.
  5. 5. Spiral review — A 40 item has 25%discount, then fictional 10%tax on discounted price. Find total. Spiral review.

Acceptance checks

An adult supervises. This stays in the family. Spending is not required.

For any optional food, adult verifies all ingredients and established allergy needs;avoid cross-contact,no tolerance tests, and use paper food if uncertain. For clothing/cleaning,adult checks sensitivities and labels;no chemical mixing.

Adult directly supervises needles, scissors, pins, appliances, and any products; count sharps before/after. No chemical mixing, pod opening, irons, machines, or real garment repair is required. Keep small parts from children/pets.

Complete the entire task using paper diagrams, fictional data,empty/inactive tools, and parent-observed explanation.

  • No unsupervised heat,sharp tools,cleaners,or appliances.
  • No raw-meat handling,unsafe food tasting,chemical mixing,flame/smoke experiments,or electrical repair.
  • No real childcare/medical/intimate care,financial transactions,credentials,private records,or public posting.

If this is still shaky. Use this lesson’s worked model to make a three-box process card.Label the goal, one safety/constraint check, and the evidence you would show.Explain it to a parent before trying the main task again.

Optional extra. Change one fictional constraint in this lesson, such as available time, access, ingredient restriction,or pretend cost.Revise one artifact and show what must change and what safety/privacy rule stays fixed.
