PLECK lesson 118 · suggested week 24, day 3

Attach a button or model the attachment

Objective. Attach a button or model the attachment:apply the stated method to a concrete case, produce the requested evidence, and justify safe, private, and accessible choices.

About 25–50 minutes. The due date is chosen by a parent.

Split across sittings as needed;no timer or required date.Adult approval remains required even for independent work.

Materials: paper, pencil, optional calculator.

A sew-through button is secured through its holes with repeated thread passes and a stable finish. Placement should match its function, and enough clearance may be needed for fabric thickness. An adult supervises needle use and checks that any real button is secure. Small buttons are choking hazards, so samples stay away from children/pets and are not made into childcare toys. Paper buttons and drawn passes are fully acceptable. Safety and boundaries: Adult directly supervises needles, scissors, pins, appliances, and any products; count sharps before/after. No chemical mixing, pod opening, irons, machines, or real garment repair is required. Keep small parts from children/pets. Family-only evidence;use fictional details,no faces or private records. No purchases are required.

Worked example

Unscored model for discussion;use the assignment case for your own work.

A two-hole paper button on a drawn fabric patch shows repeated passes between holes and a secured underside, without a real needle.

Attach a button or model the attachment — evidence and reflection

  1. 1. Draw a two-hole button attachment path with beginning and finish.
  2. 2. Make an adult-supervised scrap sample or paper simulation; label placement.
  3. 3. Explain why a button must be checked for secure attachment and kept from young children.
  4. 4. Create a repair handoff card stating what was done and what an adult should inspect.
  5. 5. Spiral review — Goal 150, saved 30, contribution 20 per period. How many periods are needed? Spiral review.

Acceptance checks

An adult supervises. This stays in the family. Spending is not required.

For any optional food, adult verifies all ingredients and established allergy needs;avoid cross-contact,no tolerance tests, and use paper food if uncertain. For clothing/cleaning,adult checks sensitivities and labels;no chemical mixing.

Adult directly supervises needles, scissors, pins, appliances, and any products; count sharps before/after. No chemical mixing, pod opening, irons, machines, or real garment repair is required. Keep small parts from children/pets.

Complete the entire task using paper diagrams, fictional data,empty/inactive tools, and parent-observed explanation.

  • No unsupervised heat,sharp tools,cleaners,or appliances.
  • No raw-meat handling,unsafe food tasting,chemical mixing,flame/smoke experiments,or electrical repair.
  • No real childcare/medical/intimate care,financial transactions,credentials,private records,or public posting.

If this is still shaky. Use this lesson’s worked model to make a three-box process card.Label the goal, one safety/constraint check, and the evidence you would show.Explain it to a parent before trying the main task again.

Optional extra. Change one fictional constraint in this lesson, such as available time, access, ingredient restriction,or pretend cost.Revise one artifact and show what must change and what safety/privacy rule stays fixed.
