PLECK lesson 119 · suggested week 24, day 4

Clothing care and repair portfolio

Objective. Clothing care and repair portfolio:apply the stated method to a concrete case, produce the requested evidence, and justify safe, private, and accessible choices.

About 35–75 minutes. The due date is chosen by a parent.

Split across sittings as needed;no timer or required date.Adult approval remains required even for independent work.

Materials: paper, pencil, optional calculator.

Combine label reading, laundry decisions, and a small sewing model. Choose only a fictional garment or an adult-approved scrap; no student must repair a family item. Include a cost/no-purchase decision and safety record. A paper portfolio with care labels, stitch diagrams, and a button path meets every requirement. Grade accuracy and reasoning, not fashion, body size, or perfect craftsmanship. Safety and boundaries: Adult directly supervises needles, scissors, pins, appliances, and any products; count sharps before/after. No chemical mixing, pod opening, irons, machines, or real garment repair is required. Keep small parts from children/pets. Family-only evidence;use fictional details,no faces or private records. No purchases are required.

Worked example

Unscored model for discussion;use the assignment case for your own work.

A portfolio explains why a pretend sweater is dried flat and shows a paper running-stitch sample for a separate scrap repair.

Clothing care and repair portfolio — evidence and reflection

  1. 1. Create a fictional garment card with fiber, care instructions, and one repair need.
  2. 2. Submit sorting/washing/drying/storage decisions linked to its label.
  3. 3. Attach two stitch/attachment models and a sharp-tool count or paper-only note.
  4. 4. Compare repair versus replace with invented costs and explain one limitation.
  5. 5. Spiral review — Explain why cooked grain left overnight is not saved by being plant-based. Spiral review.

Acceptance checks

An adult supervises. This stays in the family. Spending is not required.

For any optional food, adult verifies all ingredients and established allergy needs;avoid cross-contact,no tolerance tests, and use paper food if uncertain. For clothing/cleaning,adult checks sensitivities and labels;no chemical mixing.

Adult directly supervises needles, scissors, pins, appliances, and any products; count sharps before/after. No chemical mixing, pod opening, irons, machines, or real garment repair is required. Keep small parts from children/pets.

Complete the entire task using paper diagrams, fictional data,empty/inactive tools, and parent-observed explanation.

  • No unsupervised heat,sharp tools,cleaners,or appliances.
  • No raw-meat handling,unsafe food tasting,chemical mixing,flame/smoke experiments,or electrical repair.
  • No real childcare/medical/intimate care,financial transactions,credentials,private records,or public posting.

If this is still shaky. Use this lesson’s worked model to make a three-box process card.Label the goal, one safety/constraint check, and the evidence you would show.Explain it to a parent before trying the main task again.

Optional extra. Change one fictional constraint in this lesson, such as available time, access, ingredient restriction,or pretend cost.Revise one artifact and show what must change and what safety/privacy rule stays fixed.
