PLECK lesson 131 · suggested week 27, day 1

Resource use:water, energy, and waste

Objective. Resource use:water, energy, and waste:apply the stated method to a concrete case, produce the requested evidence, and justify safe, private, and accessible choices.

About 25–50 minutes. The due date is chosen by a parent.

Split across sittings as needed;no timer or required date.Adult approval remains required even for independent work.

Materials: paper, pencil, optional calculator.

Conservation means meeting needs while avoiding unnecessary resource use. Fixing leaks and electrical issues is an adult/professional responsibility. Students can plan shorter running-water periods, full appropriate loads, and turning off unneeded lights when permitted. Do not reduce hygiene, food safety, medical needs, or safe lighting to save resources. Use invented usage numbers, not utility bills or appliance experiments. Safety and boundaries: Adult manages products and hazards. No mixing cleaners, bleach/ammonia/acids, no electrical repair, fire/smoke experiments, climbing, mold/body-fluid/broken-glass cleanup, or heavy lifting. Paper diagrams are sufficient. Family-only evidence;use fictional details,no faces or private records. No purchases are required.

Worked example

Unscored model for discussion;use the assignment case for your own work.

A fictional faucet uses 2 units per minute; turning it off for 3 unneeded minutes saves 6 units in that invented model, not a measured household claim.

Resource use:water, energy, and waste — evidence and reflection

  1. 1. Using the fictional 2-units/minute model, find savings for 4 minutes.
  2. 2. Create a three-action conservation plan with a safety/access limit for each action.
  3. 3. Sort paper waste cards using fictional local rules; note that real rules vary.
  4. 4. Explain why conservation should not mean unsafe cold storage or skipping handwashing.
  5. 5. Spiral review — List two button-sample hazards and their controls. Spiral review.

Acceptance checks

An adult supervises. This stays in the family. Spending is not required.

For any optional food, adult verifies all ingredients and established allergy needs;avoid cross-contact,no tolerance tests, and use paper food if uncertain. For clothing/cleaning,adult checks sensitivities and labels;no chemical mixing.

Adult manages products and hazards. No mixing cleaners, bleach/ammonia/acids, no electrical repair, fire/smoke experiments, climbing, mold/body-fluid/broken-glass cleanup, or heavy lifting. Paper diagrams are sufficient.

Complete the entire task using paper diagrams, fictional data,empty/inactive tools, and parent-observed explanation.

  • No unsupervised heat,sharp tools,cleaners,or appliances.
  • No raw-meat handling,unsafe food tasting,chemical mixing,flame/smoke experiments,or electrical repair.
  • No real childcare/medical/intimate care,financial transactions,credentials,private records,or public posting.

If this is still shaky. Use this lesson’s worked model to make a three-box process card.Label the goal, one safety/constraint check, and the evidence you would show.Explain it to a parent before trying the main task again.

Optional extra. Change one fictional constraint in this lesson, such as available time, access, ingredient restriction,or pretend cost.Revise one artifact and show what must change and what safety/privacy rule stays fixed.
