PLECK lesson 136 · suggested week 28, day 1

Listen to understand before solving

Objective. Listen to understand before solving:apply the stated method to a concrete case, produce the requested evidence, and justify safe, private, and accessible choices.

About 25–50 minutes. The due date is chosen by a parent.

Split across sittings as needed;no timer or required date.Adult approval remains required even for independent work.

Materials: paper, pencil, optional calculator.

Active listening means attending, letting a person finish, and checking understanding. Paraphrase the main idea without pretending you agree with everything. Ask a clear question instead of guessing motives. A person may want to be heard rather than advised. Use fictional dialogue or a willing adult role-play; no real conflict or private relationship story is required. Safety and boundaries: Fictional people or paper characters only. No real child/older adult recording, sole supervision, feeding, medicine, bathing, lifting, transport, diagnosis, or intimate care. A responsible adult retains all real caregiving duties. Family-only evidence;use fictional details,no faces or private records. No purchases are required.

Worked example

Unscored model for discussion;use the assignment case for your own work.

“You need a quieter workspace before tomorrow's project—is that right?”checks meaning without labeling the speaker as unreasonable.

Listen to understand before solving — evidence and reflection

  1. 1. Write a four-line fictional dialogue showing interruption, then revise it with active listening.
  2. 2. Create three neutral clarification questions for a shared-task disagreement.
  3. 3. Role-play or script a 60-second listening exchange with fictional names.
  4. 4. Explain the difference between understanding someone's concern and agreeing to every request.
  5. 5. Spiral review — Name three tasks excluded from student home-care practice. Spiral review.

Acceptance checks

An adult supervises. This stays in the family. Spending is not required.

For any optional food, adult verifies all ingredients and established allergy needs;avoid cross-contact,no tolerance tests, and use paper food if uncertain. For clothing/cleaning,adult checks sensitivities and labels;no chemical mixing.

Fictional people or paper characters only. No real child/older adult recording, sole supervision, feeding, medicine, bathing, lifting, transport, diagnosis, or intimate care. A responsible adult retains all real caregiving duties.

Complete the entire task using paper diagrams, fictional data,empty/inactive tools, and parent-observed explanation.

  • No unsupervised heat,sharp tools,cleaners,or appliances.
  • No raw-meat handling,unsafe food tasting,chemical mixing,flame/smoke experiments,or electrical repair.
  • No real childcare/medical/intimate care,financial transactions,credentials,private records,or public posting.

If this is still shaky. Use this lesson’s worked model to make a three-box process card.Label the goal, one safety/constraint check, and the evidence you would show.Explain it to a parent before trying the main task again.

Optional extra. Change one fictional constraint in this lesson, such as available time, access, ingredient restriction,or pretend cost.Revise one artifact and show what must change and what safety/privacy rule stays fixed.
