PLECK lesson 141 · suggested week 29, day 1

Understand development without diagnosing

Objective. Understand development without diagnosing:apply the stated method to a concrete case, produce the requested evidence, and justify safe, private, and accessible choices.

About 25–50 minutes. The due date is chosen by a parent.

Split across sittings as needed;no timer or required date.Adult approval remains required even for independent work.

Materials: paper, pencil, optional calculator.

Children develop across physical, language, cognitive, and social-emotional areas, and the pace varies. Warm, predictable, age-appropriate interaction supports learning. A course activity does not diagnose development or replace a clinician's screening. Use fictional profiles, books, and paper activity plans. Do not observe, record, or compare real children for a grade or take responsibility for their supervision. Safety and boundaries: Fictional people or paper characters only. No real child/older adult recording, sole supervision, feeding, medicine, bathing, lifting, transport, diagnosis, or intimate care. A responsible adult retains all real caregiving duties. Family-only evidence;use fictional details,no faces or private records. No purchases are required.

Worked example

Unscored model for discussion;use the assignment case for your own work.

A fictional preschooler may enjoy naming pictures and taking turns; the plan offers simple choices rather than a diagnosis or performance ranking.

Understand development without diagnosing — evidence and reflection

  1. 1. Create a fictional profile with interests and support needs, not a diagnosis.
  2. 2. Match a picture-book discussion and a stacking activity to possible development areas.
  3. 3. Explain why a missed skill should not be diagnosed by a classmate.
  4. 4. Draft a parent-reviewed activity-plan template with an explicit adult supervisor field.
  5. 5. Spiral review — Distinguish cleaning from disinfecting and state the usual sequence when both are needed. Spiral review.

Acceptance checks

An adult supervises. This stays in the family. Spending is not required.

For any optional food, adult verifies all ingredients and established allergy needs;avoid cross-contact,no tolerance tests, and use paper food if uncertain. For clothing/cleaning,adult checks sensitivities and labels;no chemical mixing.

Fictional people or paper characters only. No real child/older adult recording, sole supervision, feeding, medicine, bathing, lifting, transport, diagnosis, or intimate care. A responsible adult retains all real caregiving duties.

Complete the entire task using paper diagrams, fictional data,empty/inactive tools, and parent-observed explanation.

  • No unsupervised heat,sharp tools,cleaners,or appliances.
  • No raw-meat handling,unsafe food tasting,chemical mixing,flame/smoke experiments,or electrical repair.
  • No real childcare/medical/intimate care,financial transactions,credentials,private records,or public posting.

If this is still shaky. Use this lesson’s worked model to make a three-box process card.Label the goal, one safety/constraint check, and the evidence you would show.Explain it to a parent before trying the main task again.

Optional extra. Change one fictional constraint in this lesson, such as available time, access, ingredient restriction,or pretend cost.Revise one artifact and show what must change and what safety/privacy rule stays fixed.
