Capstone checkpoint 5:clothing care and repair

Objective. Capstone checkpoint 5:clothing care and repair:apply the stated method to a concrete case, produce the requested evidence, and justify safe, private, and accessible choices.

About 25–50 minutes. The due date is chosen by a parent.

Split across sittings as needed;no timer or required date.Adult approval remains required even for independent work.

Materials: paper, pencil, optional calculator.

Fictional capstone case:four people share a 90-minute meal-and-home-reset event. One needs a seated workspace and one avoids milk; an adult must verify ingredients. The paper budget is$60:reserve$10 for savings, up to$20 for food, $8 for care supplies, $12 for transport, and the rest as buffer. Use paper tools/food by default; no purchases, real guests, or actual care are required. The capstone includes a fictional garment needing care and a small repair model. Supply the care label before selecting a method. A paper hem or button path demonstrates technique without requiring sharp tools. Adult-supervised scrap work is optional. Keep small parts away from children/pets and do not repair protective or safety-critical equipment for class. Safety and boundaries: All capstone evidence can be paper/simulation. Adult approval/direct supervision for any optional food, heat, sharp-tool, cleaning, or sewing activity. No real care subjects, transactions, public posting, or private household information. Family-only evidence;use fictional details,no faces or private records. No purchases are required.

Worked example

Unscored model for discussion;use the assignment case for your own work.

A fictional “wash cold, dry flat”garment is not put in the hot dryer plan; its repair is shown on a separate paper sample.

Capstone checkpoint 5:clothing care and repair — evidence and reflection

  1. 1. Create a fictional garment label and justify sorting, washing, drying, and storage choices.
  2. 2. Attach a running/backstitch, hem, or button model with labeled steps.
  3. 3. Add a sharp-tool count or complete paper-only substitution record.
  4. 4. Compare repair cost 2 versus replacement cost 18 in the fictional case, and state a nonprice consideration.
  5. 5. Spiral review — A message demands a password within 5 minutes. What are three safe responses? Spiral review.

Acceptance checks

An adult supervises. This stays in the family. Spending is a simulation, not real money.

For any optional food, adult verifies all ingredients and established allergy needs;avoid cross-contact,no tolerance tests, and use paper food if uncertain. For clothing/cleaning,adult checks sensitivities and labels;no chemical mixing.

All capstone evidence can be paper/simulation. Adult approval/direct supervision for any optional food, heat, sharp-tool, cleaning, or sewing activity. No real care subjects, transactions, public posting, or private household information.

Complete the entire task using paper diagrams, fictional data,empty/inactive tools, and parent-observed explanation.

  • No unsupervised heat,sharp tools,cleaners,or appliances.
  • No raw-meat handling,unsafe food tasting,chemical mixing,flame/smoke experiments,or electrical repair.
  • No real childcare/medical/intimate care,financial transactions,credentials,private records,or public posting.

If this is still shaky. Use this lesson’s worked model to make a three-box process card.Label the goal, one safety/constraint check, and the evidence you would show.Explain it to a parent before trying the main task again.

Optional extra. Change one fictional constraint in this lesson, such as available time, access, ingredient restriction,or pretend cost.Revise one artifact and show what must change and what safety/privacy rule stays fixed.
