Video Game Design and Coding

PLECK lesson 121 · suggested week 25, day 1

Plan readable enemy behavior

Objective. Describe an AI as explicit rules rather than human intelligence.

Godot Engine Standard desktop editor 4.7.2-stable, GDScript (Godot 4), Compatibility renderer. Headless Godot 4.7.2.stable.official.ed1daf0bf passed 106 assertions on the supplied scaffolds, including malformed JSON saves. Audio used the Dummy driver and a synthetic WAV, not a speaker. The visual editor, browser export, and signed-in submission were not tested. The desk still does not run a student's own upload.

About 55 minutes. The due date is chosen by a parent.

Patrol, detection, chase, return and readable fairness

Suggested pace: Recall and predict 5 min; Read instruction and scaffold 12 min; Build or design the assigned artifact 25 min; Run acceptance tests 8 min; Explain and checkpoint 5 min.

Materials: Paper and pencil or a private text document, Local course folder and prior checkpoint, No paid assets or public account required.

Comes after VGC-L120.

Game AI here means programmed behavior, not a model trained on personal data. Garden Patrol uses a guard that patrols, chases within a detection radius, and returns when the player escapes. Draw states and transitions before coding. Give the player a readable cue when the guard notices them. The guard does not need to be unbeatable or humanlike. Use an open room so direct steering is sufficient; maze navigation would require another system not included in this baseline.

Worked example

A patrol guard follows two points. A separate manager handles damage, leaving steering reusable in another level with different round rules.

Plan readable enemy behavior — evidence task

  1. 1. Draw Patrol, Chase and Return states with distance-based transitions.
  2. 2. Write one cue and one fairness constraint for each state.

Deliverable. Enemy-state diagram and fairness notes.

Acceptance checks

  • VGC-L121-T1. Every state has a reachable transition.
  • VGC-L121-T2. The design requires no network, training data or account.

Understanding question. Is this game AI the same as a generative chatbot?

Submit readable text or photos/scans of each numbered design page. Audio explanation may supplement a diagram or text, not replace requested artifacts.

If this is still shaky. Use an open room and C-PATROL before C-GUARD-AI. Do not expect direct steering to navigate a maze. Start with the first assigned task and re-run its acceptance test before adding the remaining feature.

Optional extra. Add a visible state label or icon and compare how it changes player understanding. Document one changed parameter, your prediction, and the observed effect; optional, not required for completion.

Turn in a typed answer, a JPEG, PNG, or WebP photo, a PDF scan, or an MP3, WAV, M4A, MP4, or WebM file up to 4 MB. A parent can log paper. One https address is stored as text and is not opened or run. Zip and code files are refused.
